What types of historical markers can be taken as indicative that a certain group constituted an epistemic community at a certain time community?

Before an observational scientonomist can begin reconstructing the mosaic of a certain epistemic community, they need to ascertain that they are dealing with an epistemic community to begin with. In practice, this would require them to delineate the boundaries of different epistemic communities. Given that communities often tolerate disagreement among their members, to a certain extent, knowing how to identify the boundaries of a community is an important task. What kind of historical evidence may be taken as indicative of the existence of a community?
