|Preamble=The concept of an epistemic agent was made reference to by Barseghyan CiteRef::Barseghyan (2018) but currently lacks a scientonomic definition. Communities are taken to be capable of taking epistemic stances towards epistemic elements pp. 43-52 , but it is not clear why this is so, and what general properties a system must have in order to be deemed capable of doing so. The issue of whether individuals can be epistemic agents, or whether tools and instruments can be requires clarification.|Modification=An epistemic agent is an agent capable of taking epistemic stances towards epistemic elements. The taking of these stances must be intentional, that is 1) The agent must have a semantic understanding of the propositions that constitute the epistemic element in question and its available alternatives; 2) The agent must be able to choose from among the available alternatives with reason, and with the motive of acquiring knowledge.
